First built by the Portuguese and later fortified by the Dutch since the 17th century, the Galle Fort remains one of the best preserved sea fortresses in South Asia. Surrounded on three sides by the Indian Ocean, It occupies 36 hectares of land and resembles fortifications in the coastal areas of Portugal. Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Fort is an ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
