Explore the splendid wildlife kingdom of Minneriya National Park, which is home to some rare and endangered species of Sri Lanka’s wildlife. This nature sanctuary is located roughly between Habarana and the historic city of Polonnaruwa.
Things to see:
Visitors to this eco-tourist haven will discover an exotic array of wildlife such as elephants, leopards, deer and birds scattered through the 8,890 hectares of the park. A fortunate few might even catch a glimpse of the majestic Sri Lankan elephant herds, which gather around the Minneriya Tank for a drink or a bath to cool off. A famous annual occurrence at the tank is the gathering of 300 elephants, which is the world’s largest convocation of animals recorded in the wild, informally known as ‘The Minneriya Gathering’.
Minneriya Park is also famous for being a bird-watchers paradise, and it is home to some species found only in Sri Lanka, such as the Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, the Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl, and the Sri Lanka Gray Hornbill.
For an exciting wildlife adventure, embark on a jeep safari, which can be booked at the resort’s reception. Visitors are advised to take advantage of an early morning safari to be back in time to savour an authentic Sri Lankan lunch buffet bursting with local flavours.
